This geothermal area in Iceland is otherworldly. Steam rises through vents in the earth. An eerie blue river flows through it. The ground is cracked full of color. The fabric was printed on a gelatin plate, then cut up and appliquéd together. Circles fill the bubbling pots. Cracks are stitched into the surrounding work.

The ground is cracked and vents release steam into the air tied together with a strange blue river. The fabric was printed to evoke the cracked earth Spirals fill the fumaroles. Myriad textures are quilted into the surrounding earth The blue arcs pull the composition together.

“Hverrir” is an abstraction of one of the many hot spring areas in Iceland. The ovals represent the holes precariously filled with boiling water. The earth is cracked with the heat all around them. A river of mysterious blue flows through the area. The fabric is printed on a gelatin plate and then cut up and stitched together. The stitches knit the shapes together and add texture.

“Fjord” is an evocation of the Westfjords where my mother grew up. The sky and sea dominate the landscape. Mountains and cliffs carve fantastic shapes in the distance. Auroras light up the sky. The piece began with printing the fabric on a gelatin plate. I cut and rearranged shapes till the composition created a teetering balance. The stitching provided more pattern and texture. “Fjord” suggests the landscape rather than literally depicting it.

Iceland is a land where the earth cracks open and the heat and power within the earth burst forth. This piece depicts that force on a visceral level rather than literally. The bursts of boiling water balance precariously. The stitching evokes the patterns in the sprays of water and the cracked earth surrounding them. The fabric is printed on a gelatin plate and then cut up and stitched together. The shapes curve diagonally across the fabric adding a sense of movement.

This was inspired by the many fissures in the Icelandic landscape. Layers of raw rock and fertile soil with plants teeming on the surface jumble together creating a cacophony of textures.

The land in Iceland is riven by earthquakes, glacial activity and fast flowing rivers. This piece depict a rift in the earth and the layers rock and earth. The fabric was printed using plants on a gelatin plate then cut up and reassembled.

The land in Iceland is still forming. A field may appear to be covered in grass and tiny flowers. Suddenly you can find yourself at the top of a precipice, a gouge in the earth. You can walk through the gap surrounded by rocks, flowers and moss.

The glaciers in Iceland are melting. A thousand years of snow have vanished. But a glacier is still a powerful force. The melting snow can become a raging torrent carving sinuous gouges into the earth in its path as it races out to sea. I wanted to show how active a glacier is.

2019 25”x31”
Iceland’s glaciers sit over volcanos. Activity in the volcano can set off a raging flood of boiling water. The water sweeps everything in its path tearing a new riverbed on its way. Glaciers grind up the earth beneath them and spit out black rocks.

2019, 40.5”x39.5”
From far away glaciers appear as pristine white. Up close one can see the ice crushing and grinding the rock. The ice is stained with smears of black, crushed rock. The melting water from the ice carves out sinuous rivers.
